About Luigi: “Never stop moving”
After a near fatal car accident left dancer Eugene Louis Faccuito, known as Luigi,
paralyzed down one side of his body, doctors told him he’d never walk again, let alone
dance. Determined to return to the career he loved, Luigi set about to relearn how to
move. He created his own stretching and strengthening routine, recovering so well that
he went on to dance in movies including On the Town, The Band Wagon, and Singin’ in
the Rain. On movie sets, he performed his routine to keep his muscles from tightening
up during breaks. Soon, other performers joined in, and Luigi’s teaching career was
born. Later, he opened his dance studio in New York, and over the years, taught his
technique to thousands of dancers, singers and actors. Luigi died in 2015 at the
venerable age of 90. Luigi’s Jazz Center is still in operation—run by his protege,
Francis Roach. Luigi’s motto: “Never stop moving,” remains the key to his gentle, yet
demanding technique.

About the Technique:
Luigi’s technique is often called “Classical Jazz”. It borrows from ballet, but is gentler
on the body, with less turn-out of the legs, and more circular, flowing movements.

All work is done in the center, “using space as a barre.” The technique builds control,
grace, fluidity, and precision. It is suitable for beginners, professionals and anyone in
between. It is especially helpful for dancers recovering from injury.
